The Samsung R580 is an entrylevel media centre and impresses with its powerful performance and features. Samsung R580 notebook comes with Intel Core i5-430M @ 2.27GHz, 1066MHz FSB; 3MB Cache and a 512MB nVidia GeForce 310M graphics card. But while our model backs this up with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 500GB hard drive. the 15.6-inch LED screen and has a 1366?68 resolution provides striking images. Despite its glossy Super-TFT coating, reflections are kept to a minimum. Colour and contrast are strong, with deep black levels on offer, but brightness is a little lower than we would have liked. The R580 comes with a 48WH (6-cell) battery, a 3 hour, 42 minute MobileMark 2007 score may not seem like much, but remember, this is a desktop replacement laptop that will probably sit near a power outlet most of the time. The inside of the R580 Notebook is delightfully simple. A trackpad, a trackpad button, a keyboard, two speakers and a power button. Along the front edge youl find small LEDs that show Caps Lock status, hard drive activity, Wi-Fi on/off and power on/off, but otherwise it a clean slate. We wish those darn palm rest stickers weren cluttering things up, but otherwise this is a refreshing change from the usual cluttered insiders that we see. the Samsung R580 has an attractive deep red finish that fades to black toward the edges on the lid. On the inside, the front edge is red, but the back half is mostly black. The chassis picked up some fingerprints, but that was mitigated somewhat by the swirling Crystal Wave pattern. Ports are in abundance on the R580 Notebook. On the left is power, VGA, Ethernet, HDMI, a chargeable USB, an eSATA/USB combo port, ExpressCard/34, headphone and mic. On the right are two more USB ports and the Blu-ray drive. Most of the ports are arranged and spaced well, though we wish the two USB ports on the right weren stacked on top of each other. A 3-in-1 media card slot sits on the front left of the system.
